Ailments of the Undead: Stage 1 & 2
Stage 1, the body has given in to the parasites, the deadly infection clearly visible in their shambling forms.Â
Stage 2 of the undead, once the person has fully succumbed and the parasites have started to grow.
I looked at a variety of materials for these stages and ultimately decided to make their appearance closer to that of a traditional zombie due to the parasite still being in larvae form.

Ailments of the Undead: Stage 3
Stage 3, the undead have entered a cocoon-like state where all energy reserves have been re-directed to sustain the growing parasite pupa. This stage is a visual representation of how it feels to be in a Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue flare up.
I wanted the design to convey the heaviness, physical and mental decline that comes with a flare-up. In ‘medium’ level flare-ups you are unable to move much, crawling slowly is your best mode of transport with frequent stops, you are unable to digest or eat – the energy it takes to chew out-weighing the small amount of energy your body can gain from the sustenance, light is painful, and your mind is so clouded thoughts are rare.

Parasite’s design was based on the head of a Pray mantis, ground beetle larvae, and the life cycle of mosquitos.
The semi-translucent body was inspired by various slime molds, bio-film and glass-bellied tree frogs.

Roughly 1/2 way though this project I made a mock-up game-cover using my color and textures study (slide 2) of Marco Texeira’s work. The first study was later altered/fixed after making a 3D model in Blender to reference, this process will be carried through to later projects.

The concept went through several changes, starting as a POV animatic before the inclusion of chronic illnesses and media change for a more personal experience.
The animatic was then shifted to be a promotional piece released prior to the game. Remaining POV it follows a chronically-Ill individual surviving (or not) the initial outbreak. This would include small easer eggs and clues for the gameplay.

Quinn is the only partly developed player character. She is one of 4 scientists you can play and is the Parasitology specialist to compliment the gameplay of the Sociologist, Dermatologist and Physiologist.

The 2D assets were intended to be a unifying item across all character designs. Their name tags an identifier for individuals that come from the compound and the clipboard a common item found in the hideout and many of the places the player must explore to gather information.
